The Screen Actors vs. Real Life Heroes: A Reflection

I often feel that the media’s casual use of the terms "Hero" and "Heroine" tends to overshadow the dignity and sacrifice of the true heroes in our lives. I have always maintained that we should learn to respect those who perform in films for money and fame as "actors" and "actresses." For the three hours we are in the cinema, they are indeed our heroes—but to continue calling them that once the lights come up feels like a disservice to the word itself.

The true "Heroines" are those pictured here. They are the frontline warriors in the global battle against crises like the pandemic. To use military terms: they are the commandos of the infantry battalions. If these individuals, who put their lives on the line to save millions, worked only for money or recognition, they would likely find any excuse to stay safely at home, just as many of us do.

These heroes do not carry plastic guns. They don’t need someone else to write their dialogue, a playback singer to provide their voice, or a stunt double to step in when things get dangerous. Their work is raw, real, and entirely their own.

While this post features the women on my friend list, I wish I could share the photos of every healthcare worker across the globe. It is also important to note that nursing is no longer a gender-specific profession; I have many male friends who serve with distinction in this honoured field.

Today, May 12, marks International Nurses Day. I send my heartfelt wishes to all the real-life heroes around the world. May this day inspire you to remain steadfast in your integrity and continue your vital responsibility toward society.
