As we observe World Press Freedom Day today, it is vital to engage in a serious self-reflection on the true meaning and current state of the freedom we possess. The fundamental difference between humans and other creatures is our ability to express thoughts and emotions through speech and writing. After countless sacrifices and struggles throughout history, we have finally secured this freedom—but is today's media landscape truly worthy of it?

Nearly a century and a half ago, the Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky, in his novel Demons, presented a dystopian vision that has become our reality: modern politics and media have turned into a theater where everyone knows a lie is being cultivated, yet everyone pretends to believe it. Instead of being harbingers of truth, we journalists and media workers have become the 'stage managers' of this political circus. Indeed, Dostoevsky's insights are more poignant today than ever. We have degraded journalism from serious intellectual discourse into mere entertainment and artificial controversy.

By serving as a platform for leaders who merely perform scripts written by strategists, propagandists, and middlemen, and by selling their lies as 'Breaking News,' we in the media are making society intellectually hollow. Rather than inspiring people toward genuine problem-solving, we have addicted them to social media outrage and superficial disputes.

Press freedom is not a license to spread confusion or complicate existing problems. If we forget our own responsibility and continue to turn society into nothing more than an angry audience, the freedom we have earned loses all dignity. Today should not just be a day for exchanging formal greetings; it should be a day to feel the weight of our declining credibility and a day to resolve to change.
